Inspired by Basie's band, this chart should be played with a playful swinging attitude and hopefully inspire your band to find that same unity of style and purpose. Although there may be 18 of you, at times, only 3 different lines are being played. So it's important to listen to the players around you, know who you're playing in unison with and understand who has the lead, making sure you are blending and phrasing the same way (short & long notes, scoops, bends & falls) and playing in tune and in time. Good musical performance is ALWAYS about intonation and time! This song (like many Basie songs) is in AABA form. The first A section is a basic statement of the melody. The rhythm section (YOU are the pulse of the band) can start light and swinging and help the ensemble build gradually through the bridge (letter C) and into the solo section. The soloist plays 8 bars over the chords of the A section and the ensemble returns to recap the original A melody. (original theme) There's a bit of a de- crescendo into a smooth 2nd bridge (letter F)....even though it's softer and smooth, the rhythm section should keep the energy through that section and help the ensemble build into the last A section. It builds even more into the "surprise" Shout Chorus at letter H. This is the climax of the swinging! Give it all ya got! Everyone joins into the triplet figure only to have it blast into straight eights with 5 big hits. The rhythm section needs to immediately shift gears into a funky boogaloo. Check out James Brown's version of Get Up (Sex Machine) for style inspiration. Each section does it's "thing" together, building to a unison riff with the whole band and a tight ending. Although the falls throughout the chart should be fast falls, that last one can be big and long! Have fun with it!

ニック・レーンはロサンゼルスを拠点に活動するトロンボーン奏者、アレンジャー、作曲家。アイオワ州で生まれ育ったレーンは、ボストンのバークリー音楽大学を卒業後、ジャズ・トランペッターのメイナード・ファーガソンに師事し、最終的に5枚のアルバムをレコーディングした。(LAに移ってからは、何百ものアーティストと仕事をし、レコーディング、TV番組、映画で演奏、アレンジを担当。さらに、ロッド・スチュワートとの5度のワールド・ツアー、トム・ペティの "Pack Up The Plantation "ツアー、アルバム＆映画、フーの "Quadrephenia "ツアー＆DVDなど、幅広くツアーを行っている。99年以降は、シカゴのジェイムズ・パンコウの代役を定期的に務め、エタ・ジェイムズ、ニール・ダイアモンド、ヴェロニク・サンソン、ジョー・ボナマッサらともツアーを行っている。彼のピノ・ノワール・ブラスはクリスマス・ミュージックのCDをリリースしたばかりである。ソロCDは『Bone in the USA』、『Alias Smith & Lane』（いずれもインストゥルメンタルR&B）、オーケストラ、コーラス、ソロ・トロンボーンのために作曲した曲を収録した『Songs for the Heartland』の3枚がある。その他の音楽プロジェクト、CD、チャートは彼のウェブサイトwww.NickLaneMusic.com で購入できる。
